Boys come into the world with a broader range of emotional expression than girls, yet we socialize them to bury that capacity before they turn two.
Dr. Vanderhorst explains why this needs to change now, and how giving men access to their emotional strengths can improve relationships, increase productivity, and help prevent physical and social harms, from shorter lives to crowded jails.
Dr. Gloria Kay Vanderhorst is a psychologist whose career has covered the full lifespan. She began by working with preschoolers, mainly boys, and over almost 50 years of private practice has worked with preschoolers, elementary-aged children, teens, adults, and couples. Her training in Emotion Focused Therapy and Internal Family Systems helps clients recover from childhood injuries and learn to embrace their strengths.
Her recent book, Read, Reflect, Respond: The 3 R's of Growth and Change, helps adults examine their histories and grow into the present. Thought-provoking essays are paired with guided questions and space to draw, scribble, and write genuine reactions, guiding each reader to uncover parts of themselves and their stories.
She is currently writing a guide for fathers on raising boys who keep access to their full range of emotions and feel competent expressing them. As she puts it, one cannot lead down a path they have never been allowed to walk.
